To accomplish service by mail, the Arizona rules require that a party or her attorney must send a summons and a copy of the pleading, such as the lawsuit, to the party being served by a form of mail that requires a signed and returned receipt, such as certified or registered mail. Upon return of the signed receipt, the serving party must file an affidavit stating (1) that the party served was known to be located outside the state, (2) that the summons and pleading being served were mailed to that party, (3) that the papers served were in fact received as is evidenced by the defendant’s signature, and (4) the date the receipt was signed and the date it was returned to the sender.
